Navigating the Professional Identity Shift
Return to Work Transition
You spent years building your career, and now you’re preparing to re-enter that world as a completely different person.
Can I perform at the level I am used to after maternity leave? How can be away from my baby all day? Do I even want this career anymore?
Becoming a mother is not just adding a new member to your family, but another version of the identity earthquake that changes how you show up in your career, in your relationships, and in the world. In this global economic market and the high-pressure demands of Silicon Valley, the friction can feel overwhelming. You are already navigating a major life transition of matrescence, and now you have to integrate that transition into your professional identity. It’s more than just about the logistics, but also finding your way through new identities and being grounded in both worlds.

The return to work is rarely just about a change in schedule and routine. It is one of the pivotal moments of the identity shifts of becoming a mother and reintegrating that identity with the professional you. For many high-achieving mothers in Silicon Valley, the transition from being a career woman to a working mother can trigger a sense of fragmentation. We use psychodynamic therapy to explore your relationship with work, achievement, and identity. We work together to move past the wall of shame and guilt and focus on what you want to prioritize and take care of your nervous system to stay present in both identities.
If you find that the transition is feeling particularly heavy due to a difficult entry into motherhood, we can also integrate birth trauma recovery into our sessions to help settle your nervous system before you head back to the office.

When returning to work, being separated from your baby even for just a few hours can put you on high alert. We use somatic therapy to give you concrete tools for managing your nervous system while you navigate the transition of being at work and away from your baby. We find ways to ground you in a state of professional presence without losing your connection with your baby.

Being a working mom changes the dynamic of the dyadic relationship with your child. It makes the ritual of reconnection and the time you spend together so pivotal that we focus on the quality of those interactions rather than the quantity. In my infant insights, we highlight not only how to stimulate their developmental milestones, but also strengthen the bond and attachment through “serve and return” interactions. This allows you to spend your evenings intentionally engaging with your child. Ensuring that the home remains a secure place and seamlessly transitioning from professional to parent with ease.
You don’t have to choose between the career you have built and loved before motherhood and the mother you’ve become. You can acknowledge the complex range of feelings that come with juggling a career and a family while still finding space to honor your own needs deeply.
Integrating Career and Matrescence
Growing up, many of us were told we could have it all: the career, the family, the home, etc. In reality, there will never be a 50/50 balance in both identities. Instead, you are constantly shifting between high-level professional tasks and the emotional labor of motherhood.
Finding strategies and tools that allow you to navigate these shifts in attention, while also maintaining your own emotional well-being, is an essential part of the modern experience of motherhood. By using Somatic Integration, Psychodynamic therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, we will find ways to regulate your nervous system, find out where those fears of going back to work are getting triggered from, and reframe your mindset during this stage of life. I’m here to help you return to work not just as a 'working mom,' but as a leader who is grounded in her new identity.
